This is a supplemental video to our page titled "Types of Electromechanical Switches and Their Configurations".
This video is meant to demonstrate the single-pole single-throw (SPST) switch - in this case we're using a rocker switch - how one works and how to connect one to a simple circuit.

Okay, now we're going to talk about the single pole, single throw switch, and I'm using a rocker switch here for this example
0:09
It's a simple on-off switch. It has two terminals. It has a terminal here and a terminal here
0:19
And right now I've already hooked up from the power supply, the rib wire for the positive supply from the battery
0:30
going to this red jumper wire here. The other end of that jumper wire is attached to this terminal
0:38
I have it attached to the off side because when I have it in the off position
0:44
I want the LED to be off. And then on the other terminal
0:49
I have this yellow jumper wire, which is on the on side. I have the other end of the yellow jumper
0:56
going to this red jumper wire here that goes to the positive. rail or positive supply of the breadboard. I have this orange jumper wire coming from the positive supply
1:07
inline to the anode of the LED. I have the cathode of the LED in line with this resistor here and the resistor
1:17
pin on this end of the resistor goes to the negative supply rail of the breadboard going to ground or the negative supply of our battery
1:30
Now, if we press down on the on position, the red LED comes on
1:38
I press the rocker switch in the off position, the LED goes off
