Okay, now we want to perform a diode test. I have a 1N4001 diode here. And in order to test a diode, all we need to do is set our multimeter to the diode test function. You could see that there's a little diode symbol here. If I turn it my knob over to that diode test

and I take the diode and remember on a diode this gray line here represents the cathode of the diode

So I need to place my black probe from my multimeter on the gray line side on this leg here

And my black lead is connected to my common of my multimeter

I need to take my red probe of my multimeter and attach it to the anode of the diode

And I getting a reading of about 0 which is a good voltage drop reading for the diode here

Also, with the diode tester, you can test LEDs. I have these two blue LEDs here, and let's say I didn't know whether or not these LEDs were still functional

So I get my LED and I connect my red probe, to the anode of the LED

and I connect my black probe to the cathode of the LED

and it's not lighting up. So if I take this other LED

and connect the red probe to the anode of the LED and the black probe to the cathode of the LED

we could see that the LED is lighting up on this one

So that tells me that this first LED that I tried to measure is not working

It's burnt out. It actually is burnt out. And this LED is working just fine
